Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has joined the sporting community in sending his heartfelt condolences to the family of hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr, who died on Monday.

India’s sporting community mourned the loss of hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr who died on Monday, calling him a rare role model whose achievements will motivate the next generation of athletes. Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar too has joined in paying rich tribute to the legend.

“My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Balbir Singh ji Sr. He was one of the greatest to have graced the game of hockey ..May his soul Rest in Peace!”: Tendulkar wrote on Twitter.

The three-time Olympic gold-winner died after battling multiple health issues for over two weeks. He was 96.

The demise was condoled by not just Olympic sport athletes but also cricketers and politicians. Indian hockey star Sardar Singh also posted a video message with the caption: “Balbir Singh Ji, You will be missed. Great legend of the game but moreover an amazing person. #RIP #BalbirSingh Ji. @BalbirSenior”.

Former sprinter PT Usha sent her condolences by writing: “Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Balbir Singh Sr ji. An athlete par excellence and a role model beyond words! His bestowed hands may strengthen my passions more. My condolences to his family, friends and fans!#balbirsingh #Balbirhockey”.

PM Modi expressed grief on the death of Balbir Singh Sr, saying, “he will be remembered for his memorable sporting performances.”

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also expressed deep sorrow on the passing away of the legend.
